چکیده

Water users consider the safety of water according to its aesthetic properties, primarily taste and odour. Geosmin (GEO) 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) are most common odour compounds in freshwaters which cause an earthy musty water. Since human nose can detect these concentrations as low 10 ng/L, it is essential monitor drinking waters before consumer complaints produce a timely solution. Therefore, necessary identify GEO MIB producers manage problem at source. Cyanobacteria one main freshwater ecosystems. In this study, we analyzed 13 samples (9 cyanobacteria cultures from Bafa Lake, Elmalı Dam İznik Küçükçekmece Manyas Lake Taşkısığı 4 environmental Erfelek Günpınar Waterfalls Ömerli Lake) for production by HS-SPME (Head space-solid phase microextraction) coupled with GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry). The presence Cyanobacteria-specific synthase genes were also PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Taste was confirmed 2 while yielded positive results PCR. All (3 waterfalls Waterfalls, 1 sample -a reservoir) dominated Nostoc Vaucher ex Bornet & Flahault, Phormidium Kützing Gomont Pseudanabaena Lauterborn. This first report producing Turkish combining microscopy, analytical molecular techniques.

Purge-and-Trap Extraction of Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol from Soil

Although a number of techniques are available for estimating the biomass of filamentous microorganisms in soil, determination of their activity is much more difficult. We report on preliminary studies evaluating the potential use of the volatile microbial secondary metabolites geosmin and methylisoborneol as indicators of activity of filamentous microorganisms. The purge-and-trap technique for ...

Biochemical and ecological control of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in source waters.

The majority of all biologically caused taste-and-odor outbreaks in drinking water characterized worldwide are caused by microbial production of ( )-geosmin [( )-(4S,4aS,8aR)-4,8adimethyloctahydronaphthalen-4a-ol] and ( )-2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) {(1R-exo)-1,2,7,7-tetramethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ol}. Since they were first identified in the early 1960s, these two earthy-muddy-smelling metabo...

Gender Differences in Electroencephalographic Activity in Response to the Earthy Odorants Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol

Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, molecules with the same odor characteristics, are mainly responsible for the smell of soil and cause odor problems worldwide in drinking water supplies. However, the effect of these odor molecules on human brain function is still unclear. The present investigation aimed to evaluate the effect of inhalation of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol on human electroencepha...

Biodegradation rates of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin through sand filters and in bioreactors.

Taste and odour (T&O) causing compounds, in particular, 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin, are a problem for water authorities as they are recalcitrant to conventional water treatment. In this study, biological sand filtration was shown to be an effective process for the complete removal of MIB and geosmin, with removal shown to be predominantly through biodegradation. In addition, MIB and g...
